Buccleugh Challenge

Sep 16, 2016

On Friday 9th September, Gladman Scotland once again took part in the Buccleuch Property Challenge, an adventure race across the Drumlanrig Estate in Dumfries and Galloway. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the fundraising event, with all proceeds going to this year’s charity partner ChildLine. Over £10,000 was raised from the event towards a very important cause.

78 teams entered this year’s race. Competing in the single sex category, the Gladman Scotland team achieved a very respectable 4th place.

Veteran challenger Alan Cunningham returned to the Gladman line-up for his 3rd consecutive year. Concerns over his fitness following a gruelling pre-race training schedule left some questioning whether it was time for him to ‘hang up his helmet’. However, Cunningham was quick to dismiss any talk of retirement and his strong performance on the day proved he is still a vital member of the race team, setting the pace from the start and leading the team to their highest ever finish.

Short of race-fitness for last year’s challenge, returning competitor Richard Morgan was keen to silence any critics at this year’s event and entered the race in fine form. With his clinical finishing at the checkpoints and cool head in the decisive moments, it was clear why he’s a fans favourite and his skilful performance will not have gone unnoticed by rival teams.

Matthew Rose, a product of the Gladman graduate scheme was handed his debut. Keen to impress, the youngster took a gung-ho approach, pressuring the other competitors and throwing himself into every challenge. Gaining composure as the race went on, Rose showed he is confident with a map in his hands, displaying some impressive navigation skills and leadership qualities. After a mid-race injury scare in which it was feared his head was stuck in an ill-fitting life jacket, the Geordie giant recovered well and pushed on determined to the finish line. This lad could be ‘one to watch’ for the future.

Gladman Scotland would like to thank Buccleuch Property and BlueSky Experiences for organising such a fantastic event and wishes ChildLine every success in its continuing efforts to support young people.
