Charity Business Fives Football in the Construction, Housing & Property Heat

Feb 6, 2018

Gladman Scotland took part in the Charity Business Fives Football in the Construction, Housing & Property Heat at Soccerworld, Glasgow on Tuesday 30th January. The Gladman team comprised Chris Wright, Matthew Rose, Michael Izzi and Michael Fletcher, along with emergency loan signing, Alasdair Adey from Arcus Consulting, following a couple of late injuries to the squad.

While this was the first time the team had played together, there was a quiet confidence among the squad and hopes of qualifying through the Heat for the National Business Fives Finals to take place in March 2018.

In the initial group stage, the team had to overcome a few moments of miscommunication, expected from a team with so many new faces, but with 2 goals apiece from captain Chris Wright and Michael Izzi, the team managed to scrape through to the Champions League group stage with a 3-3 draw and a narrow 2-1 defeat.

After stumbling into the Champions League, it was perhaps the big stage that the team were waiting for, as they began to show glimpses of their true potential. In a 6-4 victory that saw a dominating 5-goal performance from big Matt Rose in the centre of the park; a heroic effort from Michael ‘The Cat’ Fletcher between the sticks, and a catalogue of Hollywood passes from Chris, Michael Izzi and Alasdair, this was the performance where Gladman Scotland announced themselves to the Glasgow Housing and Property football community.

Following this impressive performance however, the team was humbled in their next match with a 7-1 defeat where the intensity from the last game was clearly missing, raising a number of questions. Not least, the fact that the loss secured a spot in the Europa League semi-final, rather than progressing through the more challenging route of the Champions League knock-out stage, with both routes qualifying for the National Business Fives Finals. Any such questions disappeared swiftly however after the team succumbed to another defeat and knocked out of the tournament at the Europa League semi-final stage, by the team who went onto win the final, and missing qualification for the National Finals.

Although not the final result the team wanted, it was enjoyable, well-run event for a good cause with the opportunity to network with some of our housing and property peers afterwards. With the Summer Business Fives tournament marked in the diaries, the team are already out on the training ground and recruitment-drive to take that next step.
